Assasins, Ridderaks, Wyrdmarks- Oh My!

Assassins- how I love you so! I’ve always seen them as the ultimate baddasses, with their assassin-ery… and their cutting and poisoning…and assassin stuffs… OH COME ON, CUT ME SOME SLACK, IT’S BEEN 3 YEARS IN THE MAKING!

If you’re going into this thinking you’re going to find your typical story about a cruel, unforgiving, cold hearted assassin- think again.

If you think this is some run-of-the-mill fantasy- think again.

If you want a seemingly normal series but just love it when the author plays with your emotions and sends you down a spiraling abyss of shock, confusion, anger, hatred, love, laughter,etc.- you’ve found the perfect match for you!

This book surpassed my expectations and it has quickly become one of my favorite books. I’m talking about Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas.Image result for throne of glass

Where do I even begin? I seriously can’t find the words to explain my feels for this book. I’ve been meaning to write this review for THREE WHOLE YEARS!!! But every time I try to write up a whole big fancy review, my mind goes blank and I end up reading the whole book all over again, which I really don’t mind. To be honest with you, there’s some part of me wishing to slap 5 stars on this review and walk away.

If you didn’t know, this book centers on our protagonist Celaena Sardothien- notorious assassin and current prisoner at the salt mines of Endovier. Her temper and sassy personality shine from the first few pages and really stick with her throughout the series. Long story short, she meets Dorian, the prince of Adarlan, and his biffle and captain of the guard, Chaol, and a deal is made between the two- her freedom in exchange for three years of servitude if she wins the competition. Our cold hearted codpiece of a king thought it would be fun to choose his kingdom’s assassin in a tournament, pitting the nastiest criminals the wealthy noblemen could find against each other. Like a cockfight. This is all a literal cockfight. I’m done, review over, bed now.

BUT ALAS TROUBLEARRIVES! ALERT THE POLICE, BECAUSE THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET DIRTY HERE!

If you get the gist of it, she has to participate, win, yaddah, yaddah, yaddah- whatever, you’ll get to read the rest of it and you’ll know what happens. I kinda don’t feel like going through the whole book. Knowing myself, I’ll probably have another brain fart and it’ll take me another 3 years. Now, onto the semi-spoilers and semi-bashing!

Wow. Lots of semis here. I’m just gonna put this over here…

(If you do want to read this book and you don’t want to experience the cruelty of spoilers, dial 3 and press pound for a spoiler free review-coming soon!)

Celaena is seriously amazing. Now, a lot of people bash her for not being a cruel assassin. ‘Oh she’s too girly and infatuated with arbitrary things like books and dresses’- cut her some slack guys! I do get why people are upset at this, and I have to admit, I was too. But one has to look at the complete situation. She wasn’t raised as an assassin, she was trained to be one. Arobynn found her half dead when she was around 8 years old. She was accustomed to a way of living at that point and even when she was training under Arobynn, she was exposed to all that. But where she is ‘incompetent’, she makes up for it in her personality. She is oh so arrogant, inquisitive, strong willed, stubborn, and just plain funny. I love her banter with her two love interests but I hate the fact that we readers are tortured with yet another dramatic love triangle. Her friendship with Nehemia is so empowering because these girls can get shit done. Even though sometimes they can be mad sus for noooo reason. I could talk for days about this girl but we gotta move on!

Dorian and Chaol… why Sarah J Maas, why must you torture us with these boys Sarah?!! The whole entire time, I just felt like smashing their heads together and calling it a day. I seriously couldn’t choose which team to root for. For one, Chaol and Celaena are so cute together- the way they train, how they act around each other, the ring! But I love her and Dorian, and some part of me thinks I shipped them at first but at this point, my memory serves me better as a jar because its so empty…

I KNOW I’M NOT FUNNY, I’M SORRY! I JUST CAN’T RESIST THESE BAD JOKES!

As characters, Dorian and Chaol are nice to have around, but imo they were distractions to what was really going on with all the Wyrdmarks and dead people (and fantastic beasts and caves under the castle where you can find them and this is quickly becoming a run-on sentence and I don’t know where I’m going with this…) They do play important roles, I’m not denying that, but they served more as frustrating adorable beings that caused me pain and grief later on. You’ll get it if you’re up to Heir of Fire.

Overall, this book is really worth it. This series is worth it. Even if you have mixed feelings about the first book, read the next one. Trust me, it’s worth it. I rarely invest all my life savings into a series (jk, jk I’m always spending money on books) but this one takes the chocolate cake.

I give it four and a half slices of chocolate cake (comment ‘flaming unicorns’ if you understand why)

So I Think I’m Allergic To Cats…

Last week, I went to visit some of my cousins whom I haven’t seen in ages and they have the cutest cat ever! I call her my baby because I was there the day they brought her home. She is such a playful cat and now, she’s gotten so big! But during the few times I visit my baby during the year, I always get super itchy eyes on my way home and I’ll start sneezing uncontrollably. I don’t want to say that its her, because it will kill me, but she is the only cat I’m really around. I hope this isn’t true, because I really, REALLY wanted to adopt a kitty. How will I do that with allergies?!!!!!!!!

Monument 14- Sky On Fire by Emmy Laybourne

Sky On Fire

Last year, I went into an obsession with dystopian/post-apocalyptic books. From Divergent to Numbers (not the show), I read them all- including Monument 14.It was a good read- finished it al in one sitting. Though it wasn’t one of my favorites, it’s a good book. Dean, the protagonist, and a bunch of others including his brush and his brother, are trapped in Greenway after their bus driver mysteriously disappears. They were dropped off there after a a series of disasters. In the end they decide to leave for Denver, where there, they will travel to Canada. But only a few remain, the twins, an expecting Astrid, Dean’s crush, and the protagonist himself. The biggest threat for all of them is the outside world, where a chemical weapon is dispersed in the air, affecting each person differently according to their blood type. The ending left off at a cliffhanger which really irked me. I didn’t bother to check if there were sequels, so that was forgotten. Turns out that it is a trilogy that ended a few month ago.

The other day when I finally went to the library, I found this by accident. And boy was I excited to read it. I don’t want to go into it too much, as not to give any spoilers. But I’ll give you guys a few of my thoughts after finishing this.

It’s a great quick read- I finished it in a few hours. The book is just over 200 pages, and it is a very short 215 pages. I really liked hearing from both Alex’s and Dean’s point of view. You as the reader, got to experience the struggles they had from staying at the Greenway and travelling to Denver. The ending left me wanting a third book (which i discovered later on) where their journey would continue.

The cons of this book-

  • Dean was so annoying- all he really cared about was Astrid.
  • Alex tried to be older than he really was- which is thirteen.
  • Sahalia is irritating
  • The ending was so rushed and had unnecessary chapters that were only a few sentences per page. I really wished it were more thorough.
  • The diary format that Alex has is cute but I would have preferred just a first person p.o.v

Overall, I give it three and a half Muffins. It’s a good book but not a fave.

Three and a Half

I hope you enjoyed this post!

With love,

Summer

In Other News…

So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D O A

I have recently decided to start watching Friends again on Netflix from the beginning. And let me tell you, this has been one of the best decisions of my journey of procrastination (LOL). I had forgotten how funny this show was, especially since I don’t have the time these few months to do anything really. Is anyone else up to join me? Let’ relive the 90s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got it!!!

I finally got Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I just say, this cover is gorgeous! The colours really give the cover a eerie feeling. I don’t know, I’m probably just crazy, but you have to admit that it is simply stunning.

Words cannot express the utter joy and happiness I am feeling right now. Seriously, this was one of my most anticipated books of the month and maybe the season. It was a Christmas gift from one of my close friends but due to unforeseen circumstances, we could never exchange our gifts. So finally, on Friday, we gave each other the gifts that had been waiting oh-so-patiently these past few weeks. This weekend was actually quite exciting because I could actually sit down and hang out with some of my closest friends. But before I go off rambling about things that don’t necessarily concern this book (a.k.a The Proposal)…

I really hope that I can finish this book by March, seeing that my TBR pile is steadily growing (post to come soon), but I’m not guaranteeing anything. Who knows, maybe I’ll get started tonight instead of writing this essay. Which is due tomorrow. Well, today for you guys who are reading this.

Night loves! Happy Reading!

The Barefoot Queen

Time for a book review!!!!!!!

I know, it’s been so long, but finally, I have had the time to finish reading a book and post a review. Midterms are coming up and the semester is almost over, so free time is really rare for me as of lately.

Anyways, let’s talk about this book: I received this from the BloggingForBooks program in exchange for my honest review. And let me tell you, I have a lot to say about this book.

Well, not really. I don’t want to spoil it for you all. 🙂

The Barefoot Queen by Ildefonso Falcones is a historical novel, illustrating the lives of Gypsies in 18th century Spain. When I got home from a long day’s work and a seminar in the city, I was surprised to find this monster of a novel in a huge box full of bubble wrap that was sadly un-poppable (is that even a word?). I mean, the whole reason for the existence of bubble wrap is to pop the bubble, am I right? This novel is around 650 pages, so it is a very long read. Most of it will be read (or has been read by the time I finish this post) while I have free time during my midterms week.  The expected publication date  is January 29th, 2015 (today) so this is really exciting to receive it just in time before it’s out. Seraphina: Update#2?

I think this is update #2, right? Anwyas, I’m up to page 185 an the story iss getting really good. I’m beginning to regret not throwing myself into this book when I first got it but hey, certain things have their times to shine. And Seraphina is slowly climbing that pedestal to be called the best book of the month. I hope I can get through this by the end of the week so I can start another book in my TBR pile. What do you guys suggest I read next?

Happy Reading!
Love,

Miss Ria

Seraphina- Update

I’ve been reading Seraphina every now and then, since it’s been a really hectic time lately and I got up to page 149. And let me just say- it’s so good! Again, it’s really hard to get into it once you start but I think it was around page 80 where I really began enjoying this book. I hope I can finish it before the end of January, but no guarantees since midterms are coming up soon.

Happy Reading!

Love, MissRia

Seraphina- Your Thoughts?

Hey guys. I need to stop calling you ‘guys’. The word makes me cringe. What would you like to be called? Is ladybugs okay? My ladybugs? LOL please, I can’t think of anything, my creativity is at level zero.

Anyways, I just started reading Seraphina AGAIN after trying to do so for almost two and a half years. Yes, I am ashamed of having this book in my TBR pile for so long. I purchased it with great anticipation that I would read it immediately. It had everything I had ever wanted- magic, fantasy, dragons, heroine, evil monarchs, dragons, mystery, secrets, murder, DRAGONS-

Did I mention dragons? Yes, I love them very much. They are gorgeous and amazing creatures, and if you haven’t read Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George (yes, this is a middle grade novel, but it’s really worth the read)

But I tried to read it the first night I got it and I could not get into it. I don’t know whether it was the author’s writing style, or the plot, or whether it was just my mood, but I could not finish it.  So I put it on my shelf and let it gather dust among the pretty new books that I quickly read over the following year and much like today, I realized that I still had not finished it, even after a whole year.

I told myself that this year is the last year that I would leave it like this and forced myself to continue reading Seraphina. This book has amazing reviews on Goodreads and for me, it was a waste to let this praised novel sit in the far corner of my bookshelf. I think that its the writing style that made me not want to read the book. It took me until I got to page 129 to really get into the book. I hope that I can finish it and give you guys a review before the end of the year.

Have any of you read this book? What are your thoughts?

Happy Reading to all!
